Series 3: Prayer That Connects
In this prayer series, we’ve been walking through a simple but transformative truth: prayer connects. It connects us to God. It aligns our hearts with His Word. And eventually, it turns our attention outward and toward others.
That outward turn is where intercessory prayer lives.
Intercessory prayer is not about having the right words or praying longer prayers. It is about standing in the gap. It is about bringing the needs, burdens, and hopes of others before God with humility, care, and faith.
What Is Intercessory Prayer?
Scripture gives us a clear foundation:
“First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone.” 1 Timothy 2:1 (CSB)
Intercession is prayer on behalf of others. It is prayer that says, “Lord, I am willing to carry this to You.”
This kind of prayer reminds us that faith is never meant to be lived in isolation. When we intercede, we acknowledge that we are part of a larger body, connected to one another through Christ.
Listening Comes Before Interceding
One of the core themes of this series has been listening. Before we speak to God for others, we must learn to listen to Him and to people.
Intercessory prayer begins when we:
- Listen carefully to someone’s words and silences
- Notice unspoken needs and quiet struggles
- Ask God what He wants us to pray, not just what feels urgent to us
When prayer is shaped by listening, it becomes more compassionate and less performative. We stop praying at situations and start praying with understanding.
Praying the Scriptures for Others
Praying Scripture is one of the most powerful ways to practice intercession. When we don’t know what to say, God’s Word gives us language that is already aligned with His will.
Instead of praying vaguely, we can pray specifically:
- God’s peace over anxious hearts
- God’s wisdom over uncertain decisions
- God’s strength where someone feels weak
Scripture keeps intercession grounded. It shifts our focus from fixing problems to trusting God’s promises.

Intercession Shapes Us
Intercessory prayer doesn’t just change circumstances, it changes us.
It softens our hearts.
It widens our compassion.
It pulls us out of self-centered prayer and into God-centered concern.
Over time, intercession teaches us to see people the way God does. Not as interruptions, but as invitations to partner with Him in love.
A Simple Practice for the Week
If you’re new to intercessory prayer or feeling unsure where to start, keep it simple:
- Choose one person or situation
- Ask God what He wants you to pray
- Use one scripture as your anchor
- Pray consistently, not perfectly
Faith doesn’t grow through complexity, it grows through faithfulness.
Closing Reflection
Intercessory prayer reminds us that prayer is not only personal, it is also communal. As we listen well and pray Scripture, our faith begins to move outward in meaningful ways.
Until next time, remember, faith isn’t complicated.
It’s practical.
Walk it out one step at a time.
